James Osborne

James Osborne graduated from BA Drawing at Falmouth University in 2019, and has since been living and working as a multidisciplinary artist. He is  represented by a variety of galleries and exhibiting across the South West. Most notably he has shown with Gallery Tresco, after a winter residency, and currently has an exhibition with Amphitrite Gallery in Falmouth.

My paintings and drawings primarily explore scenes and moment in coastal landscapes through the quiet lens of a spectator meditating on a view. These works aim to comment on our connection to the natural world and act as a response to my place within particular times and spaces. I think they have a solitary nature about them.

I am a great lover of walking and immersing myself, to me the landscape exists as a place which offers solace, a space to think and consider ourselves in relation to our surroundings at a slower pace. I find that there is always a wealth of inspiration wherever I go, whether that be certain qualities of light in the sky, the dynamism of contours or perhaps just the way a tree might look.

As a result of now living in a location where my access to the coast and the sea is less frequent, I have found my creative process has developed as a collaboration between memory and observational sketches – translating an experience and a physicality through the tactility of oil paint or charcoal. I am currently working on a new prospective collection of paintings and drawings for exhibition and private sales, including a recent departure back into portraiture. Though uncertain, I am looking forward to what the future will bring.
